What Does the Indian Stamp Act, 1899 Say?
Under Section 30 read with Item 53 of Schedule I of the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, any person receiving any money exceeding ₹5,000 in cash is legally bound to give a receipt stamped with an adhesive revenue stamp of ₹1 upon request.
If cash rent exceeds ₹5,000 and is not stamped, the receipt is inadmissible as legal evidence in a court of law under Section 35 of the Indian Stamp Act.
